Mountain Lake Hotel, Mountain Lake, Virginia, circa 1940

About this postcard

A long, rambling rustic hotel with red roofs and stone-and-shingle walls sits on a wooded slope above a broad sheet of water, with smaller outbuildings and a red-roofed boathouse or pavilion at the shoreline. Mountain Lake, high in the Alleghenies of Giles County, is one of the few natural lakes in Virginia, and the hotel that grew beside it became a well-known mountain resort in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The caption names the subject simply as the hotel at Mountain Lake, Virginia.
