Mountain sunset along the Blue Ridge Parkway, circa 1940s

About this postcard

A rocky overlook in the foreground gives onto a broad view of forested Blue Ridge mountain ridges fading into a pink and orange sunset sky, with a lone evergreen on the right. The card's own caption identifies it as one of the many beautiful scenes along the Blue Ridge Parkway, the scenic motor road begun in the 1930s to link Shenandoah National Park in Virginia with Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina. Views like this, taken from the roadside overlooks and stone parapets built by the National Park Service and CCC crews, were standard souvenir subjects of the Parkway's early years.
