Mrs. Patrick Campbell, actress, circa 1900

About this postcard

A head-and-shoulders studio portrait of Mrs. Patrick Campbell, her hands raised to her cheeks. The caption gives her stage name; she was born Beatrice Stella Tanner and became one of the leading British actresses of the late Victorian and Edwardian stage. Her reputation rested on forceful, modern roles, especially the title part in Arthur Wing Pinero's The Second Mrs. Tanqueray, and later on Eliza Doolittle in George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, a part written with her in mind. Portrait cards of stage performers were popular souvenirs and publicity items at the turn of the century.
