The view looks across Pasadena from the Hotel Raymond toward Mount Lowe and the San Gabriel Mountains. In the foreground, red-roofed houses, green fields, and orchards spread over the valley floor before the land rises into the rugged foothills.
The Hotel Raymond was a large Pasadena resort, and Mount Lowe was a popular mountain destination served by the Mount Lowe Railway in the early 1900s. The scene shows the cultivated valley giving way to the steep mountain front that shaped Pasadena's role as a winter resort.
