Mt. Rushmore illuminated at night, Black Hills, SD, circa 1940

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

Night view of Mount Rushmore National Memorial, with the illuminated heads of Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Lincoln carved into the granite of the Black Hills. The caption presents Gutzon Borglum's sculpture in heroic scale and calls it 'the largest monument ever conceived or executed by man,' noting that complete figures would measure 465 feet. The memorial was still a work in progress in the late 1930s and early 1940s, and the lit faces became a nighttime spectacle in the Black Hills.
