The four carved granite heads of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln look out from the mountainside, with a pine tree framing the view in the foreground and a pastel sunrise sky behind. The site is Mt. Rushmore Memorial, in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum directed the blasting and carving from 1927 to 1941, and the four 60-foot heads became one of the most recognized monuments in the United States.
