Mulholland Memorial Fountain at night, Los Angeles, California, circa 1940

About this postcard

Night view of the Mulholland Memorial Fountain, its illuminated jets rising in a tall column of pink and white light above concentric circular basins, with automobiles parked and passing on the surrounding roadway and trees and street lamps in the background. The fountain, dedicated in 1940 at the intersection of Los Angeles's Riverside Drive and Los Feliz Boulevard, honors William Mulholland, the engineer who designed the Los Angeles Aqueduct and led the city's water department. The card's linen-era coloring and the automobiles suggest a date around the fountain's dedication period.
