About this postcard
Color view of the Manhattan Municipal Building, a tall Beaux-Arts office tower with a statue on its crown, rising above a street with pedestrians, horse-drawn carriages, and neighboring buildings. The building faces City Hall Park at Park Row and Center Streets and was built to house offices for all city departments. The caption calls the tower statue "Miss Civic Pride," likely a garbling of Civic Fame, and gives the height as 34 stories and 580 feet, with foundations sunk on pneumatic caissons and a total cost of $13,000,000. Completed in 1914, the Municipal Building had just opened when this card was sent, and its scale made it a new civic landmark at the edge of lower Manhattan.
