Municipal Piers, San Diego, California, circa 1940

About this postcard

A colorful view of the Municipal Piers along San Diego's harbor, with long red-roofed transit sheds lining the wharves, an excursion boat and steamers moored alongside, and a parking area with period automobiles and palm trees in the foreground. San Diego's municipal pier and terminal buildings, developed in the 1920s and 1930s along the Embarcadero, served the city's growing tuna and shipping trade and became a familiar waterfront landmark. The linen-era coloring and 1940s automobiles date the view to the mid-20th century.
