Napoleon House, Chartres Street, New Orleans, circa 1930

About this postcard

The Napoleon House, also known as the Girod House, stands at a corner on Chartres Street in the French Quarter. Local tradition holds that Nicholas Girod organized a rescue expedition to bring Napoleon from St. Helena to New Orleans and that the house was built as his refuge; Napoleon's death ended the plan. Another house two doors down makes the same claim, and local historians support both. In the street view, cars are parked along the curb and a pedestrian walks near the corner, with a church spire rising in the distance.
