About this postcard

A straight-on view of the inscription panel on the National Memorial Arch at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, with a circular seal carved above the text. The panel carries Henry Armitt Brown's oration, delivered at Valley Forge on June 19, 1878, the centennial of the Continental Army's departure from its winter encampment there. The arch, designed by Paul Philippe Cret, was dedicated in 1910 to honor the roughly twelve thousand soldiers who endured the Valley Forge winter of 1777-78. Brown's centennial speech was among the era's best-known tributes to that encampment, and its words were cut into the monument when it was built.
