About this postcard

The National Memorial Arch at Valley Forge rises as a stone triumphal arch with a single great opening, framed by trees and a sunset sky. It commemorates the Continental Army's winter encampment of 1777–78, when Washington's officers and soldiers endured cold and hunger. Congress authorized the memorial in 1910, and the architect Paul Philippe Cret designed it; it was dedicated in 1917. The inscription honors the officers and private soldiers and quotes Washington's 1778 tribute to their "incomparable patience and fidelity" while they were "naked and starving."
