Native fan palms, California desert, 1945

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

Three tall California fan palms stand in the foreground, their trunks hung with skirts of dried fronds, with a scattered grove of smaller palms and low brush behind them and barren hills and mountains under a blue, cloud-flecked sky. The printed caption calls them "Natives of the California Desert." The California fan palm (Washingtonia filifera) is the only palm native to the southwestern United States and a signature sight of desert oases in the Coachella Valley and around Palm Springs. By the 1940s, such desert scenery was a popular tourist subject for postcards.
