About this postcard

The picture shows the Natural Bridge, a massive limestone arch spanning a rocky gorge near Cedar Creek in Rockbridge County, Virginia. The formation rises about 215 feet and was long a celebrated tourist attraction; Thomas Jefferson purchased the site in 1774 and it became a noted Virginia landmark. Trees frame the arch, and a path with a railing runs along the stream in the foreground.
