Natural Chimneys rock formations, Mt. Solon, Virginia, circa 1934

About this postcard

Sepia photograph of the Natural Chimneys, a group of tall limestone rock towers rising from a wooded hillside at Mt. Solon in Augusta County, Virginia; wooden stairways and walkways are built between the formations, and small trees grow from the rock tops. The chimneys are eroded remnants of a limestone deposit laid down when the Shenandoah Valley lay beneath an ancient sea, and the site gives its name to the surrounding Natural Chimneys regional park. The grounds are also long associated with an annual jousting tournament, traditionally described as the oldest continuously held sporting event in America.
