About this postcard
A long timber trestle footbridge with lattice railings crosses the water toward a large gabled shipyard building, its roof studded with skylights and a tall smokestack rising behind; a stream of workers in dark clothing walks the span, and brick and clapboard yard buildings line the far shore. The caption names it the Navy Yard Bridge at Kittery, Maine, the crossing associated with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the U.S. Navy yard established on the Maine side of the Piscataqua River opposite Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The scene captures the shift-change foot traffic of the early 20th-century yard, when the facility was building submarines and refitting warships.
