About this postcard
Workers in dark clothing file across the Navy Yard Bridge at Kittery, Maine, a long timber trestle footbridge with lattice railings that crosses the water toward a large gabled shipyard building. Its roof is studded with skylights, a tall smokestack rises behind, and brick and clapboard yard buildings line the far shore. The bridge served the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the U.S. Navy yard on the Maine side of the Piscataqua River opposite Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The crowd suggests a shift change at the yard in the early 1900s, when the facility was a major employer for the surrounding towns.
