About this postcard

A view along the Needles Highway, where the roadway threads between tall, slender granite spires rising out of dense green pine forest in the Black Hills. The caption names the road and Custer State Park, the 71,000-acre South Dakota state park established in 1919. The Needles Highway, completed in 1922 and designed with the engineer Peter Norbeck, is famous for its pigtail bridges and the narrow Needles Eye tunnel cut through the rock formations shown here.
