About this postcard

A long cantilever truss highway bridge of green-painted steel strides across the broad Ohio River on tall concrete piers, with a sternwheel towboat pushing a string of barges downstream beneath it. The card names it the "New Highway Bridge across Ohio River at Cairo, Illinois," the span linking Illinois with Kentucky at the river's confluence with the Mississippi. This is the Cairo Ohio River Bridge, a cantilever truss completed in 1938 to carry U.S. highways 51, 60 and 62 across the river, later joined by a parallel span.
