The photograph looks down from a wooded overlook at Hawks Nest into the New River Canyon. A sheer cliff rises on the left, tree branches frame the top of the scene, and the river and a bridge lie far below. Hawks Nest State Park was established in 1935 around this overlook in Fayette County, West Virginia. The New River has long been the defining route through the surrounding Appalachian plateau.
