About this postcard
A bird's-eye view looks down on a curving two-lane highway cut into the wooded slope beside a broad stretch of the Delaware River, with steep forested mountains rising on both sides and a sunset glow in the notch between the ridges. The card labels the road as the "New State Highway" at Delaware Water Gap, the celebrated S-curve of the Delaware River between the Poconos of Pennsylvania and the Kittatinny Ridge of New Jersey. The modern riverside road, later followed by U.S. Route 611 and Interstate 80, replaced earlier steep routes through the Gap and became a favorite scenic drive and postcard subject in the 1930s and 1940s.
