About this postcard

The New U.S. Mint in Philadelphia fills the view as a long classical government building, seen from across a wide street. Trolley tracks run down the roadway, and bare trees and streetlamps line the sidewalk, with a fire hydrant at the corner. Completed in 1901, the building was the third home of the Philadelphia Mint, the nation's first federal coinage facility. Its monumental scale reflected the city's long role in producing American money, and the street scene places it in the trolley era of the early 1900s.
