New Year greeting with bell and roses, embossed novelty card, circa 1910

Card type
Novelty

About this postcard

An embossed New Year greeting built around a large gilded bell with a red interior, sprays of pink and white roses, a small bell-and-blossom ornament at the upper left, and a tiny inset view of a boat on the water at center. The verse, set in small gilded letterpress blocks, wishes the recipient a happy new year, a hundred and sixty-five days of good luck, and fortune that is kind, fruitful and true. Cards of this die-pressed, heavily ornamented style were a staple of the early twentieth-century greeting trade, when bells, roses and clover were standard emblems of luck and good wishes for the coming year.
