About this postcard

A bird's-eye view looks down on a New York elevated railway, where a steam train with locomotive and coaches curves along an iron viaduct. The caption contrasts the old, out-of-date buildings in the foreground with the larger, more modern buildings behind them, a clear divide between older commercial blocks and newer construction. Below the structure, horse-drawn wagons, carts, and pedestrians move through the shadowed street. New York's elevated railways were built to carry passengers above congested streets as the population grew rapidly. The card presents the system as the first of its kind in America, and by the time it was printed those steam-hauled lines were a familiar part of the city's daily traffic.
