GOLDFIELD FLORENCE, BONANZA PRODUCER OF GOLD ORE Major mine and mill workings of the New- mont Mining Corporation in Goldfield where a great new discovery of rich gold ore was made on the White Horse claim in 1947 in an area believed by the old timers of the Goldfield dis- trict, to be barren. In this picture can be seen the headframe of the famous old Florence mine, one of the early-day bonanza mines of Goldfield, now serv- ing as the main working shaft for the entire Newmont operation. At the right is the 100-ton cyanide mill erected in 1948 to treat ore from the new discovery. In the background is Columbia mountain, where Harry Stimler and Billy Marsh made the first discovery of gold on the Sandstorm claim in December, 1903, touching off a stampede that was to explode into a roaring, raw mining camp of 50,000 souls within the period of a few short years.
