Raphael's Niccolini-Cowper Madonna shows the Virgin Mary seated against a deep blue background, holding the Christ child. The child turns toward her and reaches toward her bodice. The painting is a High Renaissance Madonna and Child, dated 1508, and it belongs to the Mellon Collection at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Andrew Mellon's founding gift to the museum brought the picture to Washington, where it remains part of the collection.
