A night-time view of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's domed neoclassical house, its windows lit against dark trees and a moon in a blue, cloud-streaked sky. Jefferson designed the house and began building it in 1769; much of the material, including timber, bricks, nails, and hardware, was made on the property. The hilltop house near Charlottesville became a historic shrine, and nighttime views of historic sites were a popular novelty treatment.
