Looking down Ninth Street toward the river from in front of the Court House, the view takes in the old Market House at Main Street and, in the foreground, Fire Engine House No. 1, the house with the chimney. A few figures and a wagon occupy the roadway; brick commercial blocks and frame buildings line the hill, with a church tower at right. The caption dates the scene to "war times," when Lynchburg was a Confederate hospital center and quartermaster and supply depot. The city avoided major wartime destruction.
White border; tinted halftone/lithographic reproduction of an older photograph, colors faded and slightly mottled; scan is rotated 90 degrees.
No postmark; divided back; white border; printed caption and publisher imprint; no handwriting.
