About this postcard

A view down Ninth Street in Lynchburg, Virginia, looking toward the James River. Multi-story brick and stuccoed commercial buildings line the left side, with striped and plain awnings over the storefronts; a few pedestrians and a wagon or early vehicle occupy the street. Lynchburg was a tobacco and manufacturing city on the James River, and downtown streets like this ran downhill toward the riverfront wharves and bridges. The blocks mixed wholesale and retail storefronts, the kind of commercial district that served both local shoppers and the river trade.
