The photograph shows the richly carved Norman arched doorway of Iffley Church, its arch worked with zigzag chevron ornament. A metal grille covers the door, and a circular carved window is partly visible above. The doorway is a noted piece of English Romanesque stonework, and Iffley was still a village outside Oxford when the church was built. Its carved detail made the church a subject for architectural views and for visitors interested in medieval parish building.
