North Fort Lewis and Mt. Rainier, Washington, circa 1940

About this postcard

An elevated view looks over the barracks and buildings of North Fort Lewis toward snow-capped Mount Rainier. Dark evergreen branches and a tree trunk frame the foreground, with the mountain rising beyond the post. Fort Lewis, south of Tacoma, was a major Army post; North Fort Lewis was a cantonment built in the early 1940s as the installation expanded for World War II. The pairing of the camp and the mountain gives the scene its character: a large military installation set against the Northwest landscape.
