About this postcard
The view looks along the north side of the public square in Garnett, Kansas, where a row of two- and three-story brick commercial blocks faces the street under shaded wooden awnings. The Fourth Avenue Hotel fills the tall block at left, with a jeweler and optician's sign below; farther along, a large painted wall sign advertises the M. J. Wassmer harness shop and Owl Cigar, and horse-drawn wagons wait at the curb. Garnett, the Anderson County seat in eastern Kansas, was laid out in 1857 and grew as a courthouse and railroad town, with a square lined by masonry storefronts in the early 1900s. The sender's note adds a railroad worker's voice from Coffeyville: he has left the Wabash for the Missouri Pacific and makes his headquarters at the Miller House.
