Norumbega Tower, Norumbega Park, Mass., 1909

About this postcard

A tall cylindrical tower of rough fieldstone stands on a grassy knoll, a dark tablet set into its base. Dense green trees surround it, and the sky fades from pale blue to pink near the horizon. The structure is Norumbega Tower, a monument on the Charles River near Weston, Massachusetts, built in the late 1880s to mark the supposed site of a Norse settlement. The caption ties it to Norumbega Park, the trolley park and river resort in nearby Auburndale that drew Bostonians for boating, shows, and amusement in the early 1900s.
