Renoir's painting shows a group of figures on the grassy bank of the Seine at Chatou, a riverside village west of Paris that drew Parisian boaters and day-trippers in the late 19th century. A long red rowing boat rests at the shore, with one man seated inside and others standing nearby. Beyond them the broad river carries sailboats and rowers, and red-roofed houses line the far bank.
