About this postcard

A broad lawn of Ocean Park in Cottage City (today Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard) is dotted with strolling and seated visitors. An open bandstand or gazebo stands at left, with a shingled chapel-like building beyond it, and a horse-drawn carriage with a fringed canopy sits in the foreground. At the right a side-wheel steamer lies at a long pier on the sound, with sailboats and a crowd of figures along the waterfront. Cottage City was laid out in the 1860s and 1870s as a Methodist camp-meeting resort, and its Ocean Park and piers made it a popular summer destination served by Vineyard Sound steamers.
