Ocotillo and Cholla Cactus, Arizona desert, circa 1934

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

Tall ocotillo stalks topped with red blossoms stand in the foreground, with cholla cactus and scrub brush on reddish sand and jagged red rock formations against a blue sky. The ocotillo, a desert shrub rather than a true cactus, also goes by coach whip cactus and grows in the desert regions of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, where it blooms in spring and early summer. The cholla beside it, the "jumping cactus," has nearly invisible needles that seem to jump at anyone who gets close.
