ODE TO THE REDWOOD MONARCHS You have no contemporaries, "Monarchs" of all trees world-wide, In your forest sanctuaries On the rugged mountain side. Centuries, your growth recorded In your girth and tow'ring height, And your patience was rewarded As you rule with silent might. Generations passing ever In their colorful review Came and went, but you ceased never Pushing upward toward the blue. Elements and all abuses You withstood with heart unmoved, Your red wood serves myriad uses Beautiful and unimproved. Your majestic tops of beauty That survey your vast domain Serve as sentinels on duty In a time of war and strain— Peaceful pillars of our day, Monuments to U. S. A. AGNES M. SUNDFELT
