About this postcard

The picture shows a dense cluster of tall wooden oil derricks standing on a bare, brush-dotted hillside, with a dirt road and a single small figure in the foreground, captioned "Oil Fields, McKittrick, California." McKittrick, in Kern County, was one of California's early major petroleum districts, its fields developed in the first years of the twentieth century and worked with just this kind of timber derrick. The card records the industrial landscape of that boom period, with small wooden buildings and steam haze among the rigs.
