About this postcard

Steel derricks stand among the storefronts of Kilgore's downtown business district, with automobiles of the period parked along the curb in the foreground. The printed caption names the scene as the wells in the down town business district of Kilgore, Texas. Kilgore sat at the center of the East Texas Oil Field, discovered in 1930, and wells were drilled on the town square and between commercial blocks during the boom that followed. Derricks crowding the business district became the town's defining image, and the cars at the curb place this view in the 1940s.
