About this postcard

A small stone church with a red wooden belfry and slender spire stands on bare ledge rock, with patches of grass and a faint sea horizon behind it. The caption identifies it as the Old Church at Star Island in the Isles of Shoals, the rocky cluster off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. The chapel is traditionally dated to about 1800, when island resident Samuel Haley raised it, and it remains one of the oldest buildings in the Shoals. By the early 1900s the islands had become a summer destination, and the church served as a landmark for visitors and the conferences held on Star Island.
