Old Church tower, Jamestown, Virginia, circa 1902

Card type
Printed photo

About this postcard

A tall, ruined brick church tower stands among bare trees beside a dirt road, with a lone figure and a dog walking at left and a wooden outbuilding at right, all rendered in a hand-colored photochrom print. The tower is the only above-ground remnant of the 17th-century church at Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America, founded in 1607. The brick tower is generally dated to the 1630s–1640s church, and the site is now part of Colonial National Historical Park. The small red imprint at lower right records the copyright of 1902 by the Detroit Photographic Co.
