About this postcard

Two square coquina pillars flank a low rubble wall at the Old City Gates in St. Augustine, with trees and a bright sky behind. The printed caption dates the gates to 1743 and describes pillars 20 feet high and 10 feet thick, a 12-foot opening, and walls 30 feet long. It notes that heavy iron-bound gates once closed the passage and a drawbridge crossed the moat or ditch. Coquina, a shellstone quarried near St. Augustine, gives the pillars their weathered surface. The gates marked the northern entrance to the old walled town and remain a landmark of the city's Spanish colonial past.
