Old covered bridge over Otter Creek, Green Mountains, Vermont, circa 1910

About this postcard

A long wooden covered bridge with vertical board siding and a shingled gable roof spans Otter Creek, its dark opening showing the roadway passing through. Beyond the bridge a herd of dairy cows grazes along the stream bank in an open meadow, with wooded hills and the soft profile of the Green Mountains behind. Otter Creek is Vermont's longest river, rising in the Green Mountains and running some hundred miles to Lake Champlain, and the state's timber-truss covered bridges were a common sight along such rural crossings in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
