Old covered bridge over Valley Creek, Valley Forge, PA, circa 1941

About this postcard

A long wooden covered bridge with a red gabled roof and open side windows spans Valley Creek at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. A stone abutment shows at the right bank, and the creek runs over rocks in the foreground beneath dense green and autumn-tinted trees. Valley Forge was the site of the Continental Army's winter encampment of 1777–78 and later became a state park and national historical park. Covered wooden bridges were common in southeastern Pennsylvania in the 19th century, and the Valley Creek crossing was a local landmark and a popular postcard subject.
