About this postcard
A long wooden covered bridge with a red gabled roof and open side windows spans Valley Creek, its stone abutment visible at the right bank, with the stream flowing over rocks in the foreground and dense green and autumn-tinted trees behind. The caption names it as the old covered bridge over Valley Creek at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, the site of the Continental Army's winter encampment of 1777ā78 and now a national historical park. Covered wooden bridges of this type were common in southeastern Pennsylvania in the 19th century, and the Valley Creek crossing was a well-known local landmark and postcard subject.
