The restored Old First Church of Bennington, a Georgian meetinghouse with rows of tall windows and a central tower rising from the roofline, stands behind a low wall in the foreground. Built in 1805 and designed by Lavius Fillmore, the church was named Vermont's Colonial Shrine by the state legislature. Every feature of its 1930s restoration serves as a memorial to a Vermonter or lover of Vermont, with 121 names inscribed on the pulpit, pew plates, and tablets.
