Old Forge Dam, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, circa 1935

About this postcard

A low stone dam spans a stream, with water spilling over the crest in a thin white curtain into a broad pool below; a stone arch or culvert opening sits in the left abutment, and a grassy bank backed by dense, partly autumn-colored woods rises behind. The card names the site as the Old Forge Dam at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, recalling the iron forge established on Valley Creek in the 18th century that gave the locality its name. The surrounding area is today Valley Forge National Historical Park, preserving the ground of the Continental Army's 1777–78 winter encampment.
