About this postcard
An elevated view looks down on a sprawling industrial works set among wooded hills, with long parallel rows of dark drying racks or sheds, several tall smokestacks, and white multi-story buildings at the edges of the complex. The caption names the site as Old Hickory, near Nashville, Tennessee. Old Hickory was a planned company town built by E. I. du Pont de Nemours during World War I to house workers at a massive smokeless powder plant on the Cumberland River, and the town remained an industrial community afterward.
