Two views show the Old Indian House in Deerfield, Massachusetts, with a large tree in front, and a closer look at its door. The printed caption says the door was "gashed by savages" on Feb. 29, 1703-4, the date of the raid on the frontier town. The house survived that attack and stood into the 19th century; after it was demolished, the damaged door was kept as a relic. The sender, signing as "aunt Mattie," visited Deerfield and saw the door, but reported that the house was gone.
