The Old Nathan Hale School House in New London, Conn., is a small red clapboard one-room schoolhouse with a gambrel roof, white trim, and a rough stone foundation set above a grassy bank and stone steps. Frame houses and utility poles stand in the background. Tradition holds that Nathan Hale, a young Yale graduate later hanged as a spy during the Revolution, taught here in 1774-1775 before joining the Continental Army. The building was preserved as a colonial landmark.
